Legal Question in Family Law in California

Annulment

I was married 14 days when my husband abused me and the police took me to a ''safe house''. I am now in a shelter and trying to relocate. My husband is not in jail. I am 19 yrs. old and he is 40 yrs. old. We lived together for approx. 5 months. Can I get an annulment of my marriage? If so, how long do I have to get the annulment? And, do I need a lawyer to do this? Or can I go to a paralegal service to help me fill out the paperwork? Does my husband have to agree to the annulment?

Re: Annulment

You should seek counsel of an attorney. Most times, first visit is no charge. Annulments are not easily acquired. Call attorney to discuss.

In a general sense, you can use either use a paralegal or an attorney. Nullity of marriage is more difficult than dissolution as the gounds for nullity are more narrow and specific.

For a specific opinion regarding your individual circumstances, I suggest that you consult with an experienced family law lawyer. Experience is not expensive, it's priceless!
