assets and debts

Do all debts have to be paid before splitting assets. I'm asking this in relation to buying a new car. It's probably better for me to buy a car before I file for divorce?

The overall division of both assets and debts must be divided equally. If it isn't possible to make it come out even one spouse must pay the other an equalizing payment. Usually a car and the debt associated with it go together so if you buy a car just before separating you should plan on being responsible for the payments.
