Legal Question in Family Law in California

How do I get my attorney to finish my case?

I filed for dissolution. My attorney messed up from the beginning by not reading the paperwork, doing any research on a few items, not following through so that my dissolution resulted in a final but with no status date. At least my ex(?) told me so. I have yet to see any final papers. It also ended up costing much more than it should have and my ex(?) husband and I worked out the settlment even though because of this attorney, it ended up costing me a bundle. I can't get him to answer my call or letter. I was very polite until he refused to respond. I don't know if I'm even divorced or not. I don't know what to do.

Go to the courthouse and look at the court file. If the judgment has been entered, have them make a copy for you and you're finished.

If judgment has not been entered, hire another attorney. At the same time, file for fee arbitration with the local bar association. If they don't have this service, you can do it through the state bar.
