Legal Question in Family Law in California

My attorney mailed me a form to release him a few weeks before a court date I did not because I did not have the money to hire a new attorney . He told me he would not proceed with any other actions on my case until he received payment. When I did come to his office before he would sign the release he said I would have to sign a promissory note a deed of trust 1/2 undivided interest in real property. He had it notorized.I feel he pressured me to sign. Is this extortion?

It is not likely it rises to the level of extortion, but you should report him to the State Bar. I see several possible ethical violations in what he has done.
