Legal Question in Family Law in California

Aunt visitation rights

I have been a part time caretaker of my nephew for the past 8 years. I have even given my nephew full time shelter (twice) when his father ''did not want him anymore''. Can my ex brother-in-law (who has custody) keep my nephew from visiting me due to a personal matter between he (the father) and I? The matter does not have any negative bearing for my nephew, however, I believe that denial of visitation will/has been detrimental to my nephew.
