Legal Question in Family Law in California

Bank Statements

My husband and I are fighting for full custody of my step daughter. We find her mom to be unfit. We had an attorney but it seem like we were getting no where especially when thing were her wrong. Now her atty is asking for any/all bank statements, 07-08 tax info and credit card info. Can he do this? And can my husband (In pro per) request the same documents from her? If so, how? We are just asking for full custody, she can keep the monthly child support. Some one help us please!
