Legal Question in Family Law in California

In 1990 I got married to my husband in LAS vegas Nv. We lived in California until 1996 when we seperated because of him going back to prison. I saw him after he got out in the later part of 1998 for 4 days. I just found out about 7-8 months ago that he is now remarried and living in Idaho. He got married on May1,2002. I got his wife to send me a copy of their marriage certificate. He never divorced me as far as I know. I want to get married but I want to be sure I do this the right way.
