Legal Question in Family Law in California
How should my brother respond to this letter ?
My brother, age 52, owes back support from years ago. He got copper poisoning from his well-paying job and had to quit and quickly was in arrears. Since then, he'd been woking for cash as a day laborer and handyman, but now he owes close to $10K (including interest).
He currently lives in a studio apt, works at a bakery, and is very frugal. He is ''in-line'' to get managerial training within a year, which would increase his salary considerably, and give him some money to begin paying off his back support. Both children are now over 21.
Last week, he received a letter from the Dept of Child Support Services (he had not received on in a long time, but doesn't know why not) along with a ''Coupon--Return with Payment.'' The letter was sent to the wrong street address, but the postal carrier knows the folks on his route and made sure my brother got the letter.
How should my brother respond (if at all) to the letter from the child support services office? He doesn't have any extra money to make a payment (yet), but will have that managerial position within a year's time.
Thank you.

He shouldn't respond until he talks to an attorney concerning his current situation. However, he should do something. Talk to an attorney and plan some reasonable strategy to get this issue behind him. Good Luck, Pat McCrary
