Business Value In a Divorce
My wife of 25 years has moved out and we have filed for legal separation and now we are in front of a mediator. We started a business three years ago, a yoga studio. My wife was the teacher and I was the business guy at time of launch. The business has done very well so much so that it is my wifes sole source of income. She contends that if she walks away from the business the business is worth nothing and if I try to seek value beyond her income offsetting my alimony that she will just walk away from the business. What do I do? This is a 80K plus per year income biz with about 12 hours of work per week. If I get a business valuation, what good is it if she just walks away??? Is there any way a judge would rule in my favor since I'm not a yoga teacher and can only run a great biz but can't teach yoga. Would a judge at all look at the value of the business at the time of separation as the value of the business rather than whatever she has done with it between now and then and or walks away?
