Legal Question in Family Law in California

Calculating Child Support in California

I am the noncustodial parent of two

children. My eldest is now 18 and in

the middle of June will graduate high

school. The monthly support I've

been paying is $965. I expected this

to be halved when he graduates.

CSS now informs me that my

support obligation will be $608 for

my second child, starting in July ( I

must pay $965 for June even

though he is technically emancipated

mid-month.)

Why is my obligation more than

half? It seems arbitrary to me.

Re: Calculating Child Support in California

California law requires that the child support be divided between the two children. Child support is not divided equally between the children. The amount that they are stated as the amount for the younger child. You can request a copy of the computer support calculation and review it. You could also go to court and run the support payment or have an attorney assist you.
