Legal Question in Family Law in California

In California, I have a child that I have cared for exclusively for the past 5 years. I would like to change his last name from his father's to my own. I've read though the courts website and understand that I must serve him papers on the hearing, but I honestly don't know where he is. I really don't want to hire a lawyer for this, and I am trying to prepare myself adequately. Do you know what the court will ask me to do?

Yes, you will be asked to do a "due diligence" search for him. Your local legal newspaper can help you with this or perhaps a process service company. (try NAPS) Possible newspapers below.
