In California, if a married couple agrees on terms & files for legal separation by themselves, when is the separation effective and how soon afterward can divorce be filed & when is that effective?

The legal separation is effective the date that the judgment is filed and the judgment is entered on the record. You should wait for your judgment papers to be processed and that should be the date you are legally separated.
