The 6 month waiting period begins on the day the petition for divorce was filed.

You must be a resident of California for 6 months prior to filing a petition for dissolution of marriage. Once a petition for dissolution is filed six months must pass from the date the summons and petition are served before a judgment may be effective. There is no waiting period which begins when you file a petition for dissolution.
