Legal Question in Family Law in California

car for a 16 year old

Hello,

Is the non-custodial parent also legally, half-responsible for the purchase of a vehicle for the child (16-year old) in addition to the child support that he or she currently pays? Thank you for your help and time.

NOW, IN RESPONSE TO YOUR INQUIRY --

Court-ordered payment of child support by the non-custodial parent supposedly accounts for all of the child's needs to the extent of the parents' relative incomes. S/he is responsible for paying additional monies for half of a car purchase only if a court order says s/he is.

Thanks for sharing your interesting inquiry with us on LawGuru, and good luck with your case.

Not unless it is a court order. I suggest that you review your underlying Orders, or consult with an experienced family law lawyer. Experience is not expensive, it's priceless!

Re: car for a 16 year old

I have never seen a court make such and order and doubt that I ever will, unless the two parents agree in writing. If there is joint legal custody there may be some liability for accidents caused by the 16 year old, but that problem is easily taken care of by insurance. Pat McCrary
