Legal Question in Family Law in California

I have a case in Family Court. If I were to reopen for a "Contempt of Court" and "Order to Show Cause" do I have to pay to have papers served or can I just mail the papers "Certified Return Receipt"? My ex's Attorney said the latter and I want to make sure that is correct Legal advice.

Your ex's attorney is lying to you. First of all, you cannot serve papers at all in the case, because you are a party to the case. It must be by someone who is over the age of 18, not a party to the action, and not named in any protective orders as a "protected person."

Second, an Order to Show Cause (OSC) re contempt must be served by personal service.
