Legal Question in Family Law in California

Name Change in California

I want to change my last name legally for personal reasons. I was told that in CA it can be changed just by using the new name, as an alternative to going to court. Is this true? And if it is, can I change my name on my license, social security, etc if I use the "usage" method? Also, I only recently moved to CA, and still have an out of state license- will this be a problem? Finally, if I do decide to use the going to court method, can I do it myself or will I need a lawyer? Thank you.

Re: Name Change in California

Yes, it is all true. You dont need a lawyer to use the court method. the court clerk will provide the forms you need.
