Legal Question in Family Law in California

Name change before divorce

My dissolution package includes a petition to restore my maiden name. One glitch after another delays the judge's approval. My attorney's office keeps telling me to be patient. I can wait patiently for the dissolution if, in the meantime, I can get my name legally changed and get on with my new life. I want my new name on my paychecks and drivers license and social security card and all of that. The default judgement process has been going on for 5 months and it looks like it will continue for at least another 5 months, if the package doesn't get rejected by the court again. I'm going crazy being stuck with his name. How long does it take to legally change my name? Can I do it while I'm in the process of a divorce?

Re: Name change before divorce

Five months seems like a long time to get the judgment signed by a judge. You should be able to start using your former name immediately. If not then put some pressure on your attorney to get the marriage dissolved.
