Legal Question in Family Law in California

Getting last name changed after marriage w/circumstances

My husband and I got married in March. He was in the middle of getting his last name changed, so on our marriage certificate his last name reads Gonzalez. He finally got his new birth certificate in May with his new last name Chavez. I want to change my last name to Chavez since we are married now, but I was told I have to go through the courts to do this since at the time we got married his name was not legally changed yet. What steps or what do I have to do to get this done soon? Thank you very much

You have to file a petition for change of name in the superior court.
