Legal Question in Family Law in California

Changing my child's name

How do I change my sons name, how much will it cost and how can I file the paperwork myself? His father has not contacted him in over a year and has not paid support in many more. Does his step-father have to legally adopt him to do this? What are the pros/cons of adoption?

Re: Changing my child's name

A petition for name change can be filed without an attorney so it doesn't have to cost you anything but the filing fee. The step father does not have to leagally adopt the child for a name change, but it would obviously help. There are many pros and cons of adoption. Adoption severs the ties (rights and responsibilities) between parent and child.
