Legal Question in Family Law in California
I'm being charged contempt to pay child support. I can't afford it and rent. I understand that I can request a public defender for my case. Can they hold me in jail till the case goes back to court if I request a public defender?

Until convicted of contempt, you are entitled to bail like any other defendant.

It's rare for the court to order a warrant and hold you in jail. It is only in the situations where you are a flight risk or fail to show up to a hearing that the court will issue a warrant for your arrest.
