Child abuse/neglect

My friend is being accused of child abuse. She accidentally hit her son in the head with a sippy cup and caused a small gash in the child's head. She was arrested and charged with violation of penal code pc273(a) in the state of California. She has no priors at all, this is a first time offender, and has committed no violent acts. What is the maximum punishment and should she hire an attorney?

She should immediately retain an attorney to represent her. Although she is probably facing only county jail time, if CPS has not been involved there is a high probability that it will. This would increase the problems that she has. Finally she should not be discussing this with anyone but her attorney.
