Child custody

I have a friend who is a minor (16) and lives with her pregnant mother who is mentally unstable. She barely has food in the house and has a hard time in school becuase she has to maintain her pregnant mother and her come and go boyfreind. My question is: if she moves to her grandmothers house 5-6 hours away, can she legally be forced to return to her mother or can she stay legally with her grandma? What would be the best route for her?

Re: Child custody

Legally a court order making the grandma the guardian of the grandchild. A a practical matter a 16 year old child stays where that child wants to stay. Another possibility is for the 16 year old to report the situation to her teacher or a counselor at school. This course of action is probably the best. It will help the granddaughter and the unborn grandchild
