Legal Question in Family Law in California

Child Custody

I live 3 hours away from my children. I had custody of them but then my ex husband filed a Notice of Good cause, I think that is what it is called, and so now I have to send in a response to that, can I mail this to the court since I live 3 hours away? Can I get help somehow to get this matter closer to where I live? I just want my kids back, I have no money for a lawyer what do I do? If you can help me please, please get back to me as soon as possible, thanks.
