Child Custody - never married

My 19 yr old daughter has a 2 yr old son. They both live w/me.The father of my grandson is somewhat supportive.Gives $ (small) and will watch him occassionaly.Concern is he has made comments that he can keep his son.What are her risks by not filing legal papers?My husband has been supporting both of them.The conditions of the fathers living is not good.He lives in a 2 bedroom apt.with mom grandma sister 2 brothers 3 nieces & 2 pit bulls.My grandsons safety is a concern.What can we do to keep him in a safe environment?

You can file a petition in family law court to establish paternity, gain custody and child support.

You should keep of diary of father's contact with the child. Also document the living conditions of the father. Request an order for full physical and legal custody of the child.
