Legal Question in Family Law in California

child custody

14 months ago my girlfriend of ten years went to prison for a 3 yrs term she left behind her 11yr old son. I am not the paternal father of this boy,but I have been caring for him since she left.I am no longer able to support him and have arranged for him to fly to Texas to stay with his blood relatives for the rest of his mother sentence.I am paying out of pocket for his $500 plane ticket and escort.His aunt is now threatening to call the police on me for child abandonment.Is that a valid charge?Can I be found guilty for turning this boy over to his own family?Is there a chance that I could be charged with commiting a crime?
