child custody

i am a 26 yr old man with a 5 yr old i wish to gain 50% custody of my son. i dont know where to start and his mother just sent me child support papers and not cause i wont pay because i do not make enough money and have no qualifications i dont want a battle over time with my son or over money but i can see the storm on the horizon where do i start with custody?
