Child left home alone

How old must a child or children be to be left home alone? I live in San Pedro, California and so far I have had conflicting information. But would like some confirmation of what I can do. Or what is legal?

There is no statute that provides guidance. The court case approach this question on a case by case basis. The major factor is the maturity of the child or children. Also the number and ages of the younger children would be a factor. Sorry but there are really no reliable guidelines to follow.
