Legal Question in Family Law in California

child support arrearages

ex never paid child or spousal support/ 7 years later he got custody of child- i originally refused to pay since there are approx 36k in money owed to me. i have been paying support to him. i do not want to pay my arrears (14k) is there a way through the court to stop my support payments and arrears -possibly like getting an offset against the money he owes me? (note: i have tried to collect my arrears numerous times- he quits his job when wage assignments come and he has no assets)
