Legal Question in Family Law in California

child support

I'm Canadian and pregnant, the father is American. The father lives in California state. We had been having a long distance relationship for a year. We have recently ended our relationship. We are currently in disagreement on the babys welfare. I would like to know how I go about getting child support. Should I seek a lawyer in California? Is there a law that will entitle me to child support from him?

Thank you,

Re: child support

You should seek a child support order here in B.C. Oncy you have such an order enforcement will be provided free by the Family Maintenance Enforcement Program; there is no need to seek a California lawyer, and it is likely less expensive for you to use the B.C. courts than foreign courts. You should see a B.C. lawyer; you don't have to use one in your locality, but are free to choose a lawyer anywhere; much of the arrangements can be done by email and telephone anyway.
