Legal Question in Family Law in California

child support - when does it

I was divorce in 1983, the divorce papers say child support will be paid until my son is of maturity (18 years old). I now understand this not true and I will have to pay until he is out of high school, is this true? How can they change my divorce contract without a court order? Is any divorce decree worth the page it is written on?

Re: child support

The law is retroactive. You will have to support your child until he/she either graduates from HS or turns age 19, whichever occurs first. However, if the child turns 18 and is not attending HS FULLTIME and LIVING WITH THE CUSTODIAL PARENT, your support obligation should end at 18.
