Child support can not be deferred but it can be reduced if you have no income. I don't know to what extent the court would allow you to not work and support your child to pursue an education. You would need to convince the court that it would be in the childs best interests in the long term to be able to pay more child support through enhanced career potential. Your arrearages anything you owe can be negotiated to a lower amount while you are in school though.

For self represented individuals you can consult with the family law facilitator self help center at your local court house.

As always please consult a local attorney prior to taking legal action. Good luck. Also please check out my Santa Clara County Family Lawyer blog.
