Child support from recently unemployed parent
My ex was recently unemployed. He said he had to quit or be fired, so he quit. He is ordered to pay 800 per month and says now that he is unemployed, he is not obligated to pay child support. Is this true or will he have to pay back child support when he finds employment? He is obligated to pay until both kids turn 18, which is in three yrs. and he wants me to settle for a lump sump of $3000.00.

He must pay $800 per month until the court order is changed. His loss of employment does not relieve him from complying with the court order for the payment of child support. Don't agree to any change without consulting with an attorney. If you cannot afford to hire an attorney contact the local family support enforcement agency. This agency will provide you with free legal services. and will advise your regarding situation and enforce the support order.

In a general sense, the obligation to pay support does not change unless and until a court changes it. Until then, he owes what he did not pay plus interest.
