Legal Question in Family Law in California
child support for single parent
I am a single parent of a 2 year old boy who was born July 1997. I have not had any contact with the father since January of 1997. I want to know my options concerning receiving support from the father who is named on the birth certificate. The father plays football for Washington State University and is under NCAA rules, so at this time he cannot have a job. He is in his senior year of school and will graduate in the Spring of 2000.

First: file a petition to establish paternity.
Second: file a motion for child support. The court can order child support only back to the date on which you file the motion to set child support. Therefore you should act quickly.
An other option is apply for aid for dependent children. This will give you immediate financial assistance. The county will then go after the father of the child to establish paternity and collect the support that was provided to you.
You should seriously consider retaining an attorney to represent you in this case or utilize the services of the district attorney. Most district attorneys are swamped with cases such as this and often do mot move quickly on a case.
