What options are open to Dad? What steps should he take to best protect himself? There is-name removed--child born of 2 unmarried people in CA not living together. 1 yr old. The mom is from Lousiana & terminal with cancer. Child kept by relatives in LA. Dad never seen child. When she is coming to CA, something always prevents her from making it there. Father has been told child will be in local airport for 2 hours on the way to somewhere else, be there. This has been 1 day in advance or same day. Couldn't make it due to work. Father requested birth cert from LA. Reply was no cert was found for that name. Father has been paying money as req'd from mother. Had to file bankruptcy, now sleeps on couch in friend's house. He was evicted from his apt. He is--name removed--cashier in--name removed--drug store & makes lower wages. He still pays money but cannot gain ground. Still has some debts not claimed in bankruptcy. Dad recently gave up custody of child. Now LA lawyer threatening to take his job, make him pay highest possible support & make him wish he had the child. Mom & lawyer don't want Mom's aunt to get custody. They feel she is after the Mom's inheritance. Dad willing to pay support, as demonstrated, but ltd. Dad moving to IL.

Re: Child Support Threats
there are quite a number of factual issues you raise, that might be best discussed verbally with an attorney. if you would like, you can contact us to set up a phone consultation on all of the circumstances you touched upon in your post. however, in a nutshell, the father of the child should immediately establish paternity legally, and his parental rights and obligations would ultimately stem from that.
