Legal Question in Family Law in California

Can I choose?

I'm almost 16. I have to go with my biological father twice a month and holidays for visitation. I do not want to go with him. When can I choose not to go? I also want to legally change my last name to my step-father's name. Can I do this before I am 18? I would rather see Jarvis on my High School Diploma and College Degree than my biological father's name. PLEASE ADVISE ME WHERE TO GO TO DO THIS!

Re: Can I choose?

visitation can only be changed by court order and it doesnt sound like there are grounds to do that but you can try.

you are free to use any name you want without formally changing it. perhaps the school will change the name on their records with a simple letter from your mother. to formally change it your mom can file a court petition. the father must be given notice and can come to court to object but at your age the judge just may grant it.
