Legal Question in Family Law in California

common-law divorce

I heard there if you are separated and not living together for 1 year and a day, that you are divorced. Would paperwork still be required?

If this doesn't result in a divorce, is there anyway there would not be an additional six month waiting period? Or would the six month period still start when paper work is filed. Thank you couldn't find info anywhere else.
