Common-law Marriage

I am trying to find out what exactly is Common-law Marriage, and how does it apply in California.

California does not allow for common law marriage. However, if a common law marriage is valid in the state it occurs, California will recognize the validity of a marital relationship. The "law of the lex loci" is basically, if its valid there, its valid everywhere.
