Legal Question in Family Law in California

"Community Property" "Legal Search"

How is "community property" defined if in CA "common law marriage" isn't acknowledged, and the couple lived together over 10 years before one of them died w/out a will and with estranged children from a first marriage? What is a legal search? Is there a reference guide for such terms as "community property" and "legal search" that state what CA laws are and define these terms? THANK YOU
