Legal Question in Family Law in California

If a couple has never been married, but have a child together, and the child has both their last names with a hyphen. Then the father decides to take the mother to court to changet the child's last name to only his. What are the chances that it could be ruled by a judge as legal? Thank you

Childrens name changes are almost never granted over the objection of either parent.
