Legal Question in Family Law in California

Going to court

My divorce finalized 6 1/2 years ago. I am just now taking my ex husband to court to try to get child support since the kids have only lived with me all this time and he has never helped because he insisted on equal custody at the time of the divorce. I have no money for a lawyer, but I'm real smart and very organized. I need to know.. when we go to court on Tuesday can I put him on the witness stand to question him in front of the judge or do I need to be a lawyer to do that?
