Legal Question in Family Law in California
What does the courts look at when granting sole custody to a parent. Can a mother that has attempted suicide once and threatened it again be granted custody?

They look at what is best for the child. But yes the mental condition of the mother is a factor. I know of a father who did in fact get sole custody of his 5 year old son. But having you go to the Court in pro per and mentioning it will get you nowhere.
If the mother is seriously a wreck which endangers the child then this is something that should be put forward by an attorney who knows how to make the case. It will take and money.
Best of luck.
