Legal Question in Family Law in California

Once a custodial parent dies and custody of the minor child shifts to the surviving parent, how can the stepparent--the surviving new spouse of the deceased parent--obtain visitation with the child?

They can petition the court. I haven't come across this issue before, so I am not sure what rights if any the stepparent has. It may be none. If it can be worked out informally with the surviving parent, that would be best.
