Legal Question in Family Law in California

My daughter was 9 when her step-father (my 2nd husband) adopted her. From the age of 12 to present, he abused her mentally and physically. Now that she is 18, she wants to change her name and remove him from her birth certificate, listing "no father". Is it possible to do this? She is not in contact with either her birth father or her adopted father and wants to do this for therapeutic reasons.

A name change is fairly ease and the appropriate forms and instructions can probably be found on your county court's website. I am not sure why the step-father's name would be on the birth certificate, but you may want to contact the county clerk of the county she was born in.
