Legal Question in Family Law in California
I'm Was A Deadbeat
I am grossly ''deadbeat.'' For years I was unable to maintain steady employment due to mental issues and alcohol/substance abuse (not excuses - just fact) and I owe my ex-wife a boatload of money. I have gotten things under control and have begun a career that is lucrative and I can work on the money owed. However, the total is so much though that by paying just regular payments, it'll take years to pay. What can be done? Is there an arrangement for a lump sum reduced amount? Can I somehow have the interest portion waived? I realize I'm grasping, but I have to get this fixed. It has totally affected lives...
The other issue is I can't get a drivers license in the state I live (CA) because the state of MA has a hold on it. I need to get a passport...but forget about that! Which is killing me because my business is in the entertainment (music) industry and travel is required.
I want to do what I can...

Extremely difficult to get past due support reduced. See an attorney to find out if there are circumstances that exist that would support asking the court to waive or reduce arrears.
If you are friends with your ex, it might be better to see if she'll close her case with child support services in exchange for some lump sum.
