Legal Question in Family Law in California
I have a dissolution of marriage pending. The hearing is in Hanford, Ca. (Central California). I'm in Southern California. Is there a form I can fill out so I do not have to be there but not get in any legal trouble? I'm currently enrolled in school and it would be detremental to my enrollment if I were to miss a class and would put me behind in work.

Depending on the type of hearing, you can file a request to appear telephonically. Some counties allow you to contact the Judge's clerk to request a telephonic appearance. Another alternative is that you can also retain an attorney to appear on your behalf in many instances. You may wish to consider appearing in-person no matter what, though. It can be very difficult to communicate with the Judge over the phone, and you do not want to compromise your rights in any way.
