Legal Question in Family Law in California

My divorce attorney in my opinion drug out the divorce proceedings over a total of 4 years. He didn't invoice me for 3 years after I paid the initial $6,000 retainer fee. He then hit me with a bill for $22,000 as he was changing accounting firms and insisted that I was invoiced monthly which I was not. He is now charging me 10% interest on the remaining balance after giving me no way of keeping the balance within a reasonable amount. Is this legal, aren't there rules for invoicing clients?

That seems unusual to be invoiced for 3 years without payment and continue services on the part of the attorney. In any event your situation would be approrpiate for fee arbitration. You should contact the local bar association in your area to request a fee arbitration. That should help you reach some conclusions on the matter.

As always please consult a local attorney prior to taking legal action. Good luck. Also please check out my Santa Clara County Family Lawyer blog.
