Legal Question in Family Law in California

I am going through a divorce in calif. My spouse was served divorce papers over 3 months ago and has chosen not to respond. I was advised not to take his default. We have a hearing for temporary spousal support next week and I've read online that, depending on the judge, my spouse can show up on the day of the hearing with his financial declaration and may get no more than a "slap on the hand" for not following the law. Are there any other possible outcomes that would help my case?

Whoever advised you not to take his default is a moron. When he failed to respond within the proper time, you should request the court to enter his default, and comply with the requirements for requesting a default judgment.
