Legal Question in Family Law in California

I am looking into getting a divorce. I have two children. The ages are 6 and 11. My wife does not work and hasn't for about 7 years now. I am the only one working. How does this affect how much I will pay in alimony and child support. This is California so I know I will have to pay.

Well the simple answer is it will affect it by you paying more. You are also probably facing spousal support as well as child support. The good news is that your wife will be expected to look for and find work, and if she does not, eventually you can have the support be based on what the court finds she should be earning. It's also mutually good news that it is in her best interest to make as much as she can, because the formula is set up such that each extra dollar she earns does not reduce her support by a dollar. So she has an incentive to get out there and earn.
