how long does a person have to pay alimony in a 37 year marriage. How much of a retirement goes to female spouse if paperwork states she gets a part. thanks

NOW, IN RESPONSE TO YOUR INQUIRY --

The facts that you have provided are not clear

enough and/or complete enough to provide a

definitive answer to you inquiry. That notwithstanding,

for so-called "permanent" spousal support the court

considers a variety of factors as set forth in CA

Fam Code � 4320 et seq to determine the amount and

duration. In a marriage of long duration (10 years)

it could be until either party dies or the supported

spouse remarries. Regarding retirement benefits, they

are usually divided on a 50/50 basis for that

portion of the benefit which accrued during the marriage.

In reply to your question spousal support generally half the lenght of the marriage but a judge has to determine that. In retiremaent half of the date of marriage to the date of sepperation in order to get it you must have a motion for joinder
