Legal Question in Family Law in California

Can I get a divorce without personally serving him?

I've been married 16 yr. 5 years ago I left the abuse. I have written several letters to our old address (po box)requesting a divorce and all the letters have been returned unopened ''unable to deliver''. I have no idea where he is and the cost of a private investagator to hunt him down is more than I can pay. Is there any way to file for divorce without personally serving him?

He must be served. Service may be by personal service or publication. To get permission to serve by publication you must make a sufficient search for his present location to satisfy the court that you have made reasonable search to locate him.
